Project Description

The Little Current Swing Bridge was built in 1913 and operated as a rail bridge until 1946, when the bridge was modified to allow motor vehicles to cross. The bridge is a five-span centre pivot swing bridge consisting of two 56 m spans. There is a sidewalk on the west side of the bridge. The bridge is listed under the Ontario Heritage Bridge List.

The existing bridge is nearing the end of its service life and is recommended for replacement. The preliminary design for the new bridge was confirmed through the Planning, Preliminary Design and Class EA study previously completed in 2023 and has been documented in a Transportation Environmental Study Report (TESR). The Preliminary recommended design includes the replacement of the Little Current Swing Bridge with a new through-truss swing bridge situated on a new alignment, located approximately 80 m west of the existing bridge.

The purpose of this Detail Design study is to review and refine the Recommended Plan identified during Preliminary Design, identify environmental impacts and proposed mitigation and protection measures, and develop construction staging plans.

This study will include reviewing existing conditions, conducting Environmental Impact Assessments, completing an extensive consultation program, refining the Recommended Plan, obtaining required permits and approvals, and determining construction staging. A Design and Construction Report (DCR) will also be completed as part of this project and will be made available for public review. The purpose of the DCR is to document the detail design, including final design and construction staging plans, anticipated environmental impacts, proposed mitigation measures, and the Class EA process including consultation.
